The first eighteen years of childhood were defined by exploration and formation: learning to work, fail forward, build technical competence, and shape identity through action rather than intention. The next eighteen have been defined by refinement: clarifying priorities, deepening values, and recognizing that the most important work is not what is started, but what is sustained through uncertainty, responsibility, and time.
Over the last fifteen years, his life has been shaped less by a single path and more by layered callings—technology, conservation, leadership, mentorship, and community building—each revealing what it means to live with intention rather than drift. What began as skill-building became responsibility, then stewardship, and ultimately a commitment to systems, people, and legacies beyond himself.

fully present in the life he has built and the landscapes that shaped him — the prairies of North Dakota, a backyard that fills each spring with the sound of returning Purple Martins, and every ordinary Tuesday that holds the potential to become the best day of his life. “Today, not tomorrow.”

with the precision of a technologist and the character of a man who has sewn his own badges back on at midnight — bringing to every client of Vogel Consulting LLC the same integrity, creativity, and stubborn commitment to getting it right that he carries into every campout, colony site, and conversation that matters.

building what those he has loved and lost began — a Purple Martin colony started because a brother built a house, a nonprofit born in one of life’s hardest seasons, a consulting practice launched in uncertainty, and a legacy that now reaches from a single troop or crew meeting to the national jamboree stage. The work is not finished. It is carried forward by those who keep showing up.

his family fiercely and quietly, his craft with discipline, the flash of iridescence as martins return each spring, the moment a participant stands taller than they thought possible, and the underwater world he and his son explore dive by dive — knowing that love is not sentiment but practice, lived through daily choice.

principle-centered in every room he enters — guided not by what is expedient but by the true north of the Scout Law he has spent years living through action: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, brave, and reverent — a man whose word is his contract and whose reputation is built on action, not promise.
It is his mission to Become
sharper with every engagement, every dive, every season, and every young person he has the privilege of watching grow. Never satisfied with “good enough,” always asking what the next step makes possible, and remembering: “If you’re going to progress, you must get started with that first step.”
It is his mission to Believe
that resilience is built quietly, that suffering can become purpose, that creativity reveals what others cannot see, and that even the darkest seasons can become the foundation for something meaningful. That silence can be transformational. Those endings become beginnings. And that no matter what has happened in the past, a colorful future is still possible.
It is his mission to Promote
the idea that doing good and doing well is not in conflict — that ethical consulting, environmental stewardship, servant leadership, empathy for the vulnerable, and genuine partnership with the people you serve are not competing values but the only way to build anything that lasts.
It is his mission to Strive
toward the standard he has kept — that no system is too broken to improve, no organization too entrenched to transform, no Scout or Venturer too uncertain to lead, no community too small to deserve something beautiful, and no bird too overlooked to be worth a lifetime of dedication from a man who does not choose the easier path when the right one was still available.

the next great adventure with curiosity, humility, and purpose — whether beneath a cold northern lake, across a North Dakota winter, around a campfire, inside organizations finding their footing, or beneath a sky at sunrise — believing that the best journeys leave people and places stronger, and that a meaningful life is measured by how many others are encouraged to have a whole year of great adventures.
